NOBBS FAMILIES CLEAR 93 %
Demand for quality Brahman and Charbray sires saw buyers travel from far and wide to attend the Nobbs Families bull sale at Moura on Friday.
The sale hit a top price of $18,000, with 67 of the 72 bulls offered by the five vendors selling for a clearance rate of 93 per cent and average of $6276.
It was a red Brahman, offered by Stewart and Tom Nobbs, Yoman Brahmans, Moura, that made the top money.
Purchased by Cecil Connolly, Krismark Downs, Theodore, the 36-month-old Yoman 24/7 tipped the scales at 978 kilograms and measured 39 cms in scrotal circumference.
Sired by Brahrock Katari, the bull boasted an eye muscle area of 145sq cm, intramuscular fat of 4.8pc, and P8 and rib fat depths of 14mm and 10mm respectively.
The Connolly's also paid a second-top price of $16,000 for Garwin 2065, offered by Roger and Roslyn Nobbs, Garwin Brahman Stud, Bauhinia.
Sired by FBC Griffin, the bull weighed in at 814kg, with a scrotal measurement of 36cm, EMA of 130sq cm, IMF of 4.1pc, and P8 and rib fat depths of 10mm and 6mm respectively.
Running 550 Brahman breeders, Mr Connolly said he was looking to take home "a good commercial bull to breed bullocks with".
"He's a good, big-volume bull, plenty of meat about him and his temperament; should breed good, heavy bullocks," Mr Connolly said of the top-priced bull.
Tom Nobbs said they had been surprised by the good sale result given the season.
"It's probably our best sale overall," Tom said.
"We'd cut the numbers back a bit and you've just got take it.
"It was good to see new buyers as well that helped out, and a lot of repeat clients."
Elders auctioneer Brian Wedemeyer, Judy Nobbs, Cordelia Stud, Moura, and Paul Connor, Rosewood Cattle Co, Morinish, who took home Cordelia Lion Heart (P) for $11,000.
The Charbray portion of the sale saw 20 of the 21 bulls on offer sell for an average of $6275.
A top price of $11,000 was reached twice for bulls offered by Chas and Judy Nobbs, Cordelia Stud, Moura.
Paul Connor, Rosewood Cattle Co, Morinish, took home Cordelia Lion Heart (P), a 24-month-old cream bull that tipped the scales at 754kg and had a scrotal measurement of 36cm.
Sired by Cordelia Dynamite (P)(CB), the bull had an EMA of 127sq cm, IMF of 3.8pc, and P8 and rib fat depths of 8mm and 6mm respectively.
Dandarbong Pastoral, Moura, purchased Cordelia R8/8, a 24-month-old cream bull that weighed 856kg and had a scrotal circumference of 41cm.
Sired by Ayr R.E.'s Nambour (CC), the bull boasted an EMA of 135sq cm, IMF of 3.7pc, and P8 and rib fat depths of 9mm and 7mm respectively.
Judy said it was a relief that the sale sold "exceptionally well".
"We know repeat clients are suffering because of the dry so we didn't know what it was going to be like," she said.
"Overall, it was a really good lineup of bulls and I think you've got to be happy with anything."
Several volume buyers dominated the sale, with McIntyre Cattle Company, Moura, taking home 12 bulls for a top of $7500 and average of $4625, while Underdog Cattle Co, Collinsville, put together a draft of seven bulls for a top price of $6000 and average of $5071.
Elders auctioneer Randal Spann said the result was solid in such dry conditions.
"A good clearance and very good average; the bulls sold consistently," Mr Spann said.
"A lot of regulars and a few new people; 39 bid cards we had today so that was very promising right from the start and it held out throughout the sale.
"Bulls went right up to Ingham, out to Springsure and a lot of local bulls, so support from a wide area."
The sale was conducted by Elders.
